{"id":392,"date":"2024-10-31T11:03:28","date_gmt":"2024-10-31T10:03:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sysdev.rdly.it\/how-climate-change-affects-infrastructure-resilience\/"},"modified":"2024-10-31T11:15:47","modified_gmt":"2024-10-31T10:15:47","slug":"how-climate-change-affects-infrastructure-resilience","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sysdev.rdly.it\/en\/how-climate-change-affects-infrastructure-resilience\/","title":{"rendered":"How climate change affects infrastructure resilience"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/sysdev.rdly.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Sysdev_Ottobre_Img1-1-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-387\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sysdev.rdly.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Sysdev_Ottobre_Img1-1-980x551.png 980w, https:\/\/sysdev.rdly.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Sysdev_Ottobre_Img1-1-480x270.png 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p>The effects that <strong>climate change<\/strong> has been having on our daily lives in recent years are now <a href=\"https:\/\/climate.ec.europa.eu\/climate-change\/consequences-climate-change_it\">a very obvious fact for each of us<\/a>: from the strong summer heat waves to the increasingly frequent anomalous disturbances, more and more extreme conditions are being encountered every day.<\/p>\n\n<p>The same is also true for <strong>infrastructure<\/strong>, which is<strong> under increasingly critical pressure<\/strong> due to climate change.<\/p>\n\n<p>Precisely from that context, in this article we will present <strong>the case of one of our monitoring interventions <\/strong>of a light tower on which anomalies had been visually detected.<\/p>\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The specific case of monitoring a light tower<\/h1>\n\n<p>After an initial site survey, it was decided to install <a href=\"https:\/\/sysdev.eu\/shbox\/\">our SHBox system<\/a> on this structure to check its <strong>stability<\/strong> and detect <strong>any<\/strong> critical <strong>vibrations or oscillations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>To achieve a comprehensive measurement of the structure, a total of <strong>seven <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sysdev.eu\/nodi-multi-sensore\/\"><strong>multi-sensor nodes<\/strong><\/a>, placed at certain strategic points:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>2 knots on the top of the tower to measure peak oscillations;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2 nodes in the middle of the tower to monitor vibration along the structure;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>3 nodes at the base to detect any movement or deformation at the base of the tower.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>In this way, by transmitting data through the LoRa network, our solution enabled real-time recording of key parameters, such as<strong> vibration amplitude<\/strong> and <strong>&#8220;elastic capacity&#8221; <\/strong>to return to the tower&#8217;s initial position through triaxial inclinometers.<\/p>\n\n<p><em>Want to learn more about how the SHBox system installation takes place?  <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/sysdev.eu\/2024\/09\/18\/il-monitoraggio-strutturale-di-un-ponte-stradale-linstallazione-del-sistema-shbox\/\"><em>Read our in-depth article.  <\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls=\"\" src=\"blob:https:\/\/sysdev.rdly.it\/9cd725d9-4b7d-4008-86d0-272724913a2b\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Driving maintenance through data<\/h1>\n\n<p>During the period of monitoring the structure, our system collected a wide range of information, allowing us to compare the actual behavior of the tower with that predicted by the design.<\/p>\n\n<p>This has highlighted <strong>an extremely significant fact<\/strong>, namely that today&#8217;s stresses do not always tend to correspond to those for which the infrastructure was originally designed. At the same time, the increase in extreme weather events is progressively accelerating the deterioration of architectural works. <\/p>\n\n<p>This type of monitoring has highlighted how <strong>the adoption of predictive technologies <\/strong>can become a <strong>crucial advantage <\/strong>for infrastructure maintenance.<\/p>\n\n<p>Where visual inspection may fail, monitoring detects minimal alterations, allowing early intervention before a critical issue results in damage or, in extreme cases, an emergency.<\/p>\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Toward a new cultural paradigm<\/h1>\n\n<p>Given this scenario, a brief <strong>reflection in the margin of<\/strong> the example just given is appropriate.<\/p>\n\n<p>Predictive maintenance is, in fact, a necessary <strong>cultural change<\/strong> to ensure the increased longevity of infrastructure and the safety of places.
